This section explains prominent concepts and notations in the set of high-level S3 commands provided. Whenever using a command, at least one path argument must be specified. There are two types of path arguments: LocalPath and S3Uri.
LocalPath : represents the path of a local file or directory. It can be written as an absolute path or relative path. S3Uri : represents the location of a S3 object, prefix, or bucket. Note that prefixes are separated by forward slashes. S3Uri also supports S3 access points. The higher level s3 commands do not support access point object ARNs. Every command takes one or two positional path arguments. Commands with only one path argument do not have a destination because the operation is being performed only on the source.
Some commands perform operations only on single files and S3 objects. For this type of operation, the first path argument, the source, must exist and be a local file or S3 object. The second path argument, the destination, can be the name of a local file, local directory, S3 object, S3 prefix, or S3 bucket.
The destination is indicated as a local directory, S3 prefix, or S3 bucket if it ends with a forward slash or back slash. The use of slash depends on the path argument type. If the path argument is a LocalPaththe type of slash is the separator used by the operating system.
If the path is a S3Urithe forward slash must always be used. If a slash is at the end of the destination, the destination file or object will adopt the name of the source file or object. Otherwise, if there is no slash at the end, the file or object will be saved under the name provided.How can I migrate objects between my S3 buckets?
Before you begin, consider tuning the AWS CLI to use a higher concurrency to increase the performance of the sync process. The sync command on a versioned bucket copies only the current version of the object—previous versions are not copied.
If the operation fails, you can run the sync command again without duplicating previously copied objects. Verify the contents of the source and target buckets by running the following commands:. Amazon's S3 service consists of objects with key values. There are no folders or files to speak of but we still need to perform typical file system-like actions like renaming folders. Renaming S3 "folders" isn't possible; not even in the S3 management console but we can perform a workaround. We can create a new "folder" in S3 and then move all of the files from that "folder" to the new "folder".
Once all of the files are moved, we can then remove the source "folder". To do this, use Python and the boto3 module. If you're working with S3 and Python and not using the boto3 module, you're missing out. It makes things much easier to work with. For the demonstration I'll be showing you to work, you'll need to meet a few prereqs ahead of time:. To rename our S3 folder, we'll need to import the boto3 module and I've chosen to assign some of the values I'll be working with as variables.
In this case, I've chosen to use a boto3 session. I'll be using a boto3 resource to work with S3. Once I've done that, I then need to find all of the files matching my key prefix. You can see below that I'm using a Python for loop to read all of the objects in my S3 bucket.
I'm using the optional filter action and filtering all of the S3 objects in the bucket down to only the key prefix for the folder I want to rename.
Once I've started the for loop iterating over the "folder" key and all of the "file" keys inside of it, I'll then need to exclude the "folder" key itself since I won't be copying that. I just need the file keys. I'm excluding that by an if statement that matches all key values that don't end with a forward slash.
After I'm in the block that will only contain file key values, I'm now assigning the file name and destination key names to make it easier to reference. You can see below that I'm creating an S3 object using the bucket name and destination file key. Once the loop has finished and all of the files have been copied to the new key, I'll then need to use the delete action to clean all of the files including the "folder" key since it is not inside of the if condition.

As mentioned before all S3 buckets have no policy attached by default. This user currently does not have any access to S3. So when we try to list files in the S3 bucket we will see the following output. You can again open the S3 bucket, go to the permissions tab and then to Bucket Policy and click on the Delete button. This will delete all polices attached to this bucket. We do not have any policy attached to this bucket as we have deleted all attached policies in the last step.
Then we can run following command to attach policy to bucket. At last we will write python scripts to get, put and delete S3 bucket policies. We can get S3 bucket policies using following code.
We have to manage that in code.
We will be using same above policy. When using Python we do not need to store policy in separate document. The following will move all the files in the S3 bucketunder data folder to localdata folder on your local machine. To delete a specific file from a S3 bucket, use the rm option as shown below. The following will delete the queries. This will not delete any file from the bucket. When you use sync command, it will recursively copies only the new or updated files from the source directory to the destination.
If you want to sync it to a subfolder called backup on the S3 bucket, then include the folder name in the s3 bucket as shown below.
Once you do the sync once, if you run the command immediately again, it will not do anything, as there is no new or updated files on the local backup directory. This is reverse of the previous example. Here, we are syncing the files from the S3 bucket to the local machine. You can also make S3 bucket to host a static website as shown below. For this, you need to specify both the index and error document.
